A sworn translation is an official translation produced by a translator who is authorised by a court or government in certain civil-law countries (e.g., France, Spain, Italy, Germany). The translatorโs signature/seal gives the translation legal standing in that jurisdiction.
In the UK, there is no legal status of โsworn translatorโ. For UK authorities (Home Office, Passport Office, universities, most embassies in London), you typically need a certified translation: a signed declaration by a qualified translator or accredited agency confirming a true and accurate translation, with date, name and contact details.
For use in the UK โ you usually need a certified translation (optionally notarised and/or apostilled if specifically requested).
For use abroad (civil-law countries) โ you may need a sworn translation performed in that country by an authorised translator. Requirements vary by authority.

Certified (UK standard): Translator/agency issues a signed statement that the translation is true and accurate, with full contact details. Most UK bodies accept this.ย
Sworn: Translation by an authorised translator in countries that maintain official lists; carries legal force there. Not a UK status.
Notarised: A UK notary/solicitor witnesses the translatorโs declaration to add an extra layer of verification (often needed before legalisation).
Apostille/Legalisation: The UK FCDO confirms the authenticity of the notary/solicitorโs signature (Hague Apostille) so your certified/notarised translation is recognised overseas.

France (traduction assermentรฉe): Performed by a translator listed with a Cour dโappel; often accepted only when produced/sworn in France.
Spain (traducciรณn jurada): Delivered by a traductor-intรฉrprete jurado registered with the Spanish authorities; originals or certified copies may be requested depending on the office. (General rule; we verify per case.)
Italy (asseverazione): Translator appears before a court/public official to swear the translation; revenue stamps/fees may apply.
Germany (beeidigte รbersetzung): By a court-sworn/authorised translator in the relevant Land; acceptance can be state-specific.
Poland (tลumaczenie przysiฤgลe): By a state-authorised sworn translator; strict formatting and stamp requirements.
If the end-user is in the UK, we default to certified (and add notarisation/apostille only if the authority asks).
